The Blue Seal Initiative

The Blue Seal Initiative – A Verification Programme for Sustainable Tourism Partners and Mindful (or Conscious) Travelers

A new sustainability verification program has been launched in Barbados in collaboration with the UNDP Accelerator Lab.

When staying or dining at the community level, locals and visitors can now consider partners (hotels, restaurants and vendors) who have been verified by the Blue Seal Program – a local, customized application of the internationally-recognised Blue Standard sustainability verification programme.

Blue Seal is an initiative of the UNDP Accelerator Lab in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean and the non-profit organization Oceanic Global (which manages Blue Standard), with the support of local sustainable consultant partner JustaTAAD. Blue Seal recognizes local enterprises – and particularly those operating within the tourism industry – that are committed to reducing single use plastic and serving sustainable fish and seafood products. There are two streams of verification – the 3-star verification for business operations and the plastic-free verification for consumer goods.

To date, six (6) local restaurants and hotels   have been verified under the program in Barbados – ECO Lifestyle & Lodge, Farm House Café, Little Arches Hotel, Local & Co. Restaurant, Sandals Barbados and Sea Fans Hotel. Mindful and impact-conscious travellers can use the Blue Directory to seek out and support verified business in Barbados and other destinations.
